Permanent Registration of Barbados ships may take place either in London or Bridgetown. On registering the vessel the Registrar who undertakes the registration becomes the ‘original registrar’ and thereafter administers the ship in so far as Bills of Sale and Mortgages are concerned.
The owner, or his agent, must submit a written application for registration; in the case of an individual, by the person requiring to be registered as an owner. An individual may authorise an agent to process the application and sign the necessary documents on his behalf and in the case of a corporation by its agent, and the authority of any agent shall be in writing.
Documents Required for Registration
- Notice of Name proposed for a Barbados ship
- Appointment of Authorised Officer
- Evidence of Title (Bill of Sale, Builder’s Cert.)
- Declaration of Ownership
- Copy of Certificate of Company Incorporation (if a company owning the ship)
- Managing Owner/Manager Declaration
- Evidence of cancellation of the previous registry
- Evidence of Insurance (P & I Cover)
- Former Tonnage Measurement Certificate
- Evidence of seaworthiness by producing the appropriate valid SOLAS, LOAD LINE and MARPOL Certificates
- Descriptive Particulars Survey Certificate
- Radio Accounting Authority (AAIC) with application and particulars for ship’s radio station licence
- Minimum Safe Manning Proposal
- Registration and Annual Fee
Ship’s Carving and Marking
Upon receipt of the above mentioned document and fees at the office of the Registrar, the owner will be issued with a Ship’s Carving & Marking Note which has to be completed by a Classification Society Surveyor, Nautical Inspector, Customs Officer, Consular Officer or Registrar of Barbadian ships. The completed Carving Note shall be returned to the Principal Registrar.
