Charter and Pleasure Yacht Registration

BMSR operates a separate Yacht Register open to all yachts limited to a passenger carrying maximum of 12 persons; irrespective of vessel’s size or whether a private or charter yacht.

Barbados registered yachts are subject to periodic inspections depending upon size, operation and age. Yachts are inspected at initial registration and then as indicated in the following schedule:

Private yacht under 24m length -
BMSR inspection over 5 years of age: 5 yearly

Private yacht 24m length or more -
BMSR inspection over 5 years of age: 4 yearly

Charter yacht under 24m length -
BMSR inspection over 2 years of age: bi-annually

Charter yacht 24m length or more -
BMSR inspection over 1 year of age: annually

BMSR applies its own yacht requirements, which in most respects mirror those requirements that can be found in the UK’s Yacht Codes. The main difference is that BMSR allows for yachts built before 1st January 2003 to be exempted certain fire protection and damage stability requirements, where it can be shown that the yacht has special features, which either make the requirement redundant or equivalent arrangements are in place.
