Barbados opens its list of recognised organisations to non-IACS class societies

Barbados has since its inception in 1993 restricted its authorisation of representation to those class societies which are full members of IACS.

Following a four year analysis of the Paris MOU PSC detention records it has become clear that the best of the non IACS class societies are outperforming the worst of the IACS class societies when measured as the number of ships detained against each class society.

Barbados Flag calls for more co-ordinated approach to inspections

The Principal Registrar of Barbados Maritime Ship Registry (BMSR) has called for greater co-ordination between port state control, classification societies and ship registries.

Speaking at the Lloyd’s List Port State Control conference yesterday (27 February), Chris Sawyer said that a new approach was needed whereby port state control should be responsible for discovering deficiencies, flag state should be responsible for controlling the ship’s condition and classification societies should apply technical oversight when required.

Barbados predicts incresed role for flag states

Changes to international maritime regulations will mean that flag states will in future become certifiers and classification societies will become ship safety compliance assessors according to Chris Sawyer, principal registrar of Barbados Maritime. Speaking at the “The Future of Ship Registers” conference in Maderia today (28 June), he told the audience that:

“The role of certifier will rest solely with flag administrations in that their direct input will be required more frequently with regard to inspections, interpretations, the control of non-compliance and the issuing of relevant documentation.”
