The Barbados Government joined the International Maritime Organisation in 1969 and became a party to the principle conventions adopted by IMO relating to safety of life at sea and the protection of the marine environment.
The Shipping Act, which came into effect during 1994, provides a comprehensive scheme for the registration of ships under the Barbados flag and regulation of ships so registered. Along with the Shipping Act, Barbados enacted the Shipping (Oil Pollution) Act.
The Barbados Maritime Ship Registry has ratified 22 conventions and require all our vessels to comply with such conventions. Currently we are implementing MLC certification onboard Barbados registered vessels in a voluntary compliance phase with no charge to ship operators to enable all parties to become familiar with the requirements before the Convention comes into force.
BMSR are recognised as a leading flag and appear on the Paris MOU White List and the US Coast Guards QUALSHIP 21 programme. In 2003 Barbados were one of the first ship registries to be certified ISO 9001 compliant.
It is the responsibility of BMSR to meet the many standards now required. We aim to consistently adhere to such standards and interpret these standards to the benefit of our customers.
